Urban verticals
As a photographer I am always fascinated by the tall buildings that characterise so much of the built environment. I am taken by the sharp lines and the dynamic perspectives that can guide the viewer’s eye as one looks vertically upwards. This architectural monochrome series captures the interplay of angles and geometry of some iconic buildings in Sydney, London and Berlin. The panel is designed to show the viewer the patterning and the balance in the arrangement with the central images culminating in the Frank Gehry's "paper bag" Building UTS structure with its intricate 320,000 custom designed bricks. The blackedout sky emphasising all these structures. The images are taken to specifically to draw the viewers eye across the picture, emphasizing the symmetry and patterning through soaring verticals. In monochrome the compositions starkly reveal interacting shadows that accentuate structural complexity, repeating patterns with bold contours, and contrasting materials - glass, steel, and concrete. Each image not only documents a built space but also evokes its creation in functionality, innovation, or aesthetic harmony.
